No Abortion, No Exceptions - The Rarity of this Position

In case you missed it, the official plank of the Republican Party in 2012 includes a clause that calls for a complete and total ban on abortions.  That means no abortions in cases of rape or incest, no abortions when the birth threatens the mother's life, just no abortions, alright?  Why, this sort of anti-woman legislation is reminiscent of those totalitarian middle eastern countries we Americans hate so much.  Actually...it's worse.

The red bits are the 'no abortion under any circumstances' countries.  They are (from left) El Salvador, Nicaragua, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Vatican City (shocker) and Malta.  Source.

I guess it's fitting that Republican-carried states are red states.  Now I'll be the first one to point out that a popular idea is not necessarily a good one.  I'll also tell you that I don't have a real strong opinion on abortion since, as a man, I won't have to contemplate getting one.  But I just want to be clear about how extremist the Republican Plank is.  It's not in line with any moral majority, and it certainly isn't in line with the conclusions of most scientifically advanced and developed nations.
